Components of Metal Coil Packaging

A steel coil is sheet metal produced as one continuous strip and wound into a roll. Coils are used everywhere, from car making and construction to home appliances. They are usually carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium or copper, and they need proper packaging to survive the knocks, moisture and weather they meet on the way to the customer.

In the steel industry, and anywhere sheet metal is produced in coil form, correct and safe packaging is not a detail; it decides whether the coil arrives in the condition it left the mill.

This article walks through every component of the most complete type of hot-rolled steel coil packaging and explains what each one does to protect quality and safety. Simpler packages are also possible, depending on what the customer needs.

1- Inner Protective Sheet (Compressed Plastic)

Material: Compressed plastic (HDPE)

Application: In metal coil packaging, a compressed plastic sheet lines the core, the eye at the centre of the coil.

Besides protecting the centre of the coil physically, these polyethylene sheets give the package a clean, professional look and improve its resistance to moisture.

2- Inner Edge Protection Rings

Material: Galvanized sheet

Application: The metal ring that protects the inner edge of a steel coil is one of the key parts of the package. It makes the coil safer to handle and protects the inner edge during transport and storage. It is usually made of galvanized sheet: thanks to its zinc coating, galvanized steel stands up well to moisture and corrosive conditions, which extends the life of the ring and gives the coil better protection.

The unrolled length of the ring has a built-in tolerance, so the ends can overlap. If the inner diameter of the coil is a little smaller or larger than standard, the overlap takes up the difference and the finished package still comes out right.

3- Outer Edge Protector (Corrugated Steel Ring)

This part is essential in metal coil packaging and protects the outer edges of the coil during loading and handling. Usually made of galvanized metal, it prevents physical damage and also helps in damp conditions: angled holes punched into the corrugated ring let water drain off the coil surface, which prevents white rust and corrosion.

The corrugated shape spreads pressure evenly over the coil edges and prevents scratches, dents and deformation, while the raised ribs stop the strap from slipping.

4- Outer Edge Protection Strap (Steel Strap)

Material: Steel

Application: One of the main tools in metal coil packaging. Its job is to hold the coil tight and stop it from unwinding or losing its shape. These straps are usually made of metal or polymer and play a key role in the transport, storage and export of metal coils.

A 32 mm wide strap is the most common choice.

5- Coil Inner Edge (Eye) Protector – ID Protector

Material: Plastic or cardboard

Application: A specialised part of metal coil packaging designed to protect the inner edges of the coil (Inner Diameter). Made from tough polymers, it keeps the inner edges from being damaged and helps the coil arrive in good condition.

6- Coil Outer Edge Protector – OD Protector

Material: Plastic or cardboard

Application: A part designed to protect the outer edges of a metal coil during packaging. By covering the outer edges, it prevents scratches, cracks and dents and keeps the coil intact. Made from tough polymer materials, the OD Protector keeps the package safe and solid through handling, transport and storage.

7- Circumferential Steel Strap

Material: Steel

Application: One of the main parts of metal coil packaging, used to hold the coil firmly and stop it from unwinding or deforming. Fastened around the circumference of the coil, this strap makes the whole package stronger and prevents mechanical damage and unwanted movement of the coil.

For this strap too, 32 mm is by far the most widely used size.

8- VCI Stretch Film

VCI Stretch Film

Application: A multi-purpose plastic wrap designed to package metals and protect them from corrosion and rust. It combines the mechanical strength of stretch film with VCI anti-corrosion technology, and it is used mainly in the metal industries, for steel coils and for other parts that are sensitive to corrosion.

The film contains VCI compounds that release protective vapours and form an invisible layer on the metal surface. This layer keeps moisture and oxygen away from the metal.

It is about 50 microns thick and is wrapped around the coil by machine.

9- Two-Layer VCI Wrap (VCI Paper Fabric Reinforced Wrap)

Material: Fabric-reinforced plastic

Application: An advanced packaging material made specifically to protect metals from rust and corrosion. It consists of two layers, a fabric-reinforced plastic and a VCI plastic; the VCI layer carries the inhibitor chemicals that form a protective film on the metal surface.

One of the key principles in packaging steel and stainless steel coils is preventing rust and corrosion during storage and transport. VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) sheets release anti-rust vapours that form an invisible protective layer on the metal surface, so moisture and oxygen cannot reach the coil directly.

This method needs no greasing or rust-preventive oil, which is why it is so popular for exports and sea freight. Speed, cleanliness and long-lasting protection are the main advantages of using VCI in professional coil packaging.

10- Outer Protective HDPE Sheet

Material: Compressed polyethylene sheet

Application: Under some export standards, this layer is the final outer cover that protects the coil from dust, moisture and environmental damage.

Material: Rust-resistant galvanized steel

Application: An essential part of metal coil packaging that helps keep the coil in good condition and protects it from physical and chemical damage. The galvanized coating makes the sheet highly resistant to moisture, weather and chemicals.

These sheets are also thick and strong enough to protect the coil from knocks and scratches during transport and storage.

12- Side Protection Disk (Side Disk Coil Packing)

Material: Metal, corrugated plastic board or plastic

Application: Also known as a CD protector or coil side protector, this is one of the main parts of metal coil packaging. It covers the side faces of the coil and plays a key role in preventing physical and environmental damage.

The edges are the most sensitive part of a coil and are easily scratched, dented or bent. The side disk covers them with a tough protective layer.

Side disks have traditionally been made of metal or corrugated plastic board, but polymer side disks are now gaining ground, because they can be printed with technical data and the manufacturer’s logo.

13- Coil Bumper (Coil Seat Protector) – Radial Bumper

Coil Bumper (Coil Seat Protector) – Radial Bumper

Material: Compressed polymer

Application: One of the basic pieces of equipment for packaging and handling metal coils, designed to prevent damage to the coil and to the surface it rests on. It sits between the coil and the floor beneath it and prevents scratches, knocks and deformation.

Made from tough polymer materials, the seat protector absorbs shocks and vibration during transport and keeps the coil from being damaged. Its surface is usually anti-slip, so the coil does not shift during handling and storage.

14- Strapping Seal

Material: Galvanized metal, stainless steel

Application: A part used to secure packaging straps on metal coils. Seals lock the straps firmly in place and stop them from loosening.

For metal coil packaging they are usually designed for 32 mm wide straps.

15- Circumferential Straps

Material: Steel

Application: Used to secure coils, keep them safe and make them easy to transport. The circumferential strap is tensioned around the coil so the wraps cannot slip or open up.

These straps have high tensile strength, so they hold firm under heavy loads, especially in transit.

Packaging metal coils is a basic step in the steel supply chain and plays a key role in keeping these products in good condition, safe and easy to transport. As this article has shown, coil packaging is made up of many components, each with its own job. Which ones you actually use depends on the type of order, the transport conditions and the final destination.

Export orders that must meet international standards and need maximum protection use most of the components: circumferential straps, strap guards, OD/ID protectors, side protection sheets and the rest. Domestic orders travel shorter routes, so a wrap, circumferential straps and strap guards (also called angular protectors, made by Ara Polymer, which you can see here) are usually enough.

In the end, coil packaging is not a fixed recipe but a flexible, made-to-measure solution designed around the customer’s conditions and needs. Its goal is to get the product from origin to destination intact and in good condition, whether it is sold at home or exported.
